چکیده

In order to overcome the limitations of the standard first or-der model of traffic flow (LWR model), various second ordermodels involving relaxation and/or anticipation terms wereintroduced in the literature. These models have the particu-larity to possess an equilibrium which can be unstable if cer-tain so-called subcharacteristic conditions are not satisfied. It can be shown that these conditions connect the character-istic velocities of the second order model to the character-istic velocity of the LWR model, and may be interpreted asa "competition" between the relaxation and the anticipationterm. The subcharacteristic conditions are also necessary toguarantee that the first order LWR model is a valid approx-imation of second order models. These stability subcharac-teristic conditions are often assumed to be naturally satisfiedalthough there is no a priori physical reason justifying suchan assertion. It is therefore of interest to analyse the systembehaviour, and namely the propagation and evolution of dis-turbances, when these conditions are not satisfied. The studyof these instabilities provide a possible interpretation of theemergence of jams and stop-and-go effects in traffic flow.Book of Abstracts23rd Benelux Meeting on Systems and Control

In many physical systems, the variables that define the performance cannot be measured directly. This may for instance stem from constraints on sensor cost, or from physical limitations in sensor placement. The performance has to be inferred from the measured variables with models, and is therefore inherently determined by model accuracy, see [1] for inferential control in the process industry,...

Vibration isolators are widely used in high-precision machines to reduce the transmissibility function T , which represents the transfer from base frame vibrations to payload vibrations. Active vibration control (AVC) can be used to further improve T . However, for industrial systems with AVC it is often difficult to show improvement of T via system identification, since it is hard to sufficien...
